If you live in Bellingham and deal with achy knees, stiff hips, or sore joints, you’re not alone. Joint pain — especially from arthritis — affects millions of people and can make staying active feel daunting. But here’s the good news: movement is one of the best medicines for arthritis.
At Bellingham Training & Tennis Club (BTTC), we believe in helping people move better at every age and stage. Whether you’re managing osteoarthritis, recovering from injury, or just trying to keep your body feeling strong, our expert trainers know how to adapt workouts to keep you active, safe, and supported.
Why Movement Matters When You Have Arthritis
It’s easy to assume rest is best when your joints hurt — but staying still often makes things worse. Gentle, consistent movement:
- Lubricates your joints by increasing circulation and synovial fluid (your body’s natural joint “oil”).
- Builds muscle strength to better support and protect your joints.
- Improves flexibility and range of motion, making daily movement easier.
- Boosts mood and energy, helping you stay motivated even on tough days.
The key is low-impact exercise — activities that strengthen your muscles and improve mobility without pounding your joints.
Best Low-Impact Exercises for Joint Health
At BTTC, we offer a variety of low-impact workouts that can help reduce stiffness and build strength safely:
- Ride Classes: Indoor cycling is easy on the knees and hips while providing a fantastic cardio workout. You control the intensity and resistance, so it’s ideal for all fitness levels.
- TRX Suspension Training: Uses your body weight and gravity for resistance — great for improving stability, balance, and functional strength.
- Strength Training: Lifting weights (even light ones!) helps maintain muscle mass and joint support.
- Yoga and Stretch Classes: Improve flexibility, posture, and relaxation while reducing joint tension.
Our trainers are experienced in modifying movements for arthritis and mobility issues — because fitness should meet you where you are.
Practical Tips for Staying Active with Arthritis
- Warm up first. A few minutes of gentle cardio or dynamic stretching helps loosen joints and reduce stiffness.
- Prioritize form over intensity. Move with control and focus — good alignment prevents unnecessary strain.
- Mix it up. Alternate between cardio, strength, and flexibility work to avoid overuse.
- Listen to your body. A little discomfort can be normal, but sharp pain is your cue to stop.
- Recover intentionally. Rest days, stretching, and hydration all support joint health and longevity.
Behind the Cause: Robin’s Story
Behind all the fun and fitness at BTTC is a cause that hits close to home for our club family.
Our co-owner, Robin Robertson, has been courageously facing osteoarthritis for years. She’s undergone an incredible 14 surgeries — eight on her left knee, four on her right, one on her big toe, and now an upcoming hip replacement.
And yet, through it all, Robin remains one of the most energetic, inspiring people you’ll ever meet. Her passion for movement, health, and community hasn’t slowed her down — it’s fueled her mission to help others facing arthritis live fuller, more active lives.
“Arthritis hurts. It’s the number one cause of joint pain, and chances are, if you don’t have it yet, you or someone you love will someday,” Robin says.
