Let’s be honest: the idea of a spin class can sound a little… intense. Dim lights. Loud music. People pedaling furiously while the instructor shouts motivational phrases from the front of the room.
But here’s the truth: indoor cycling isn’t just for hardcore athletes. It’s one of the most low-impact, high-reward workouts out there — and at Bellingham Training & Tennis Club, our Ride classes are designed to be as welcoming as they are energizing.
Whether you’re training for tennis season, cross-training for your next hike, or just trying to find a workout that doesn’t make your knees hate you — Ride is your new happy place on a bike.
What Is Indoor Cycling, Anyway?
Indoor cycling (also known as a spin class) is a cardio workout done on stationary bikes, usually to the beat of some seriously motivating music. In our Ride studio at BTTC, the lights, playlists, and instructor-led intervals create an atmosphere that’s equal parts workout and dance party.
Each class is led by one of our certified instructors, who guide you through a mix of resistance changes, speed intervals, and recovery moments. You’re in control the entire time — meaning you can make your Ride as mellow or as powerful as you want.
Why Indoor Cycling Is a Fantastic Low-Impact Workout
Unlike running or high-impact cardio, indoor cycling is easy on the joints but still gives you a full-body sweat. It builds lower-body strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness — all without the pounding.
It’s especially great for:
- Tennis players or athletes looking for cardio cross-training
- Anyone recovering from impact-related injuries
- Beginners who want a supportive, guided workout
- Busy people (classes are efficient, typically just 45–50 minutes)
And here’s a fun fact: in a typical Ride class, you can burn anywhere from 400–700 calories, depending on intensity. That’s a lot of energy packed into less than an hour — and it feels way more fun than slogging through miles on a treadmill.
Nervous to Try a Spin Class? You’re Not Alone.
Let’s get this out of the way: you don’t need fancy cycling shoes, superhuman stamina, or perfect rhythm to enjoy a Ride class. You just need a willingness to show up and try.
Our instructors are pros at welcoming first-timers — they’ll help you set up your bike, adjust your resistance, and make sure you’re comfortable before class starts. Everyone’s Ride is their own — no competition, no judgment.
If you can sit, pedal, and smile occasionally, you’re ready. (Sweating is optional, but highly likely.)
RIDE READY: What to Wear and Bring
Clothing:
- Breathable, moisture-wicking clothes — think leggings or shorts and a light top.
- Avoid anything too loose that might catch on the pedals or flywheel.
Shoes:
- Regular athletic shoes are fine! We have bikes that work with standard sneakers or SPD-compatible cycling shoes if you have them.
Extras:
- Water bottle (you’ll want it!)
- Towel (trust us on this one)
- A sense of humor (optional but encouraged)
